Morning flights from Bali reach Tambolaka in about 1 hour 15 minutes. Your guide meets you at arrivals and drives 30 minutes to Waikelo Sawah, where a spring pours from a cave mouth into an emerald irrigation weir among rice fields — a gentle first stop while the day is still cool. Continue to Praijing, the hilltop village above Waikabubak, where your guide handles introductions before any camera comes out. After lunch, drive into Manupeu Tanah Daru National Park for Lapopu Waterfall, a broad staircase of stone that runs strong even late in the dry season. Day 2: Wanokaka Pasola Arena – Marosi Beach – Lamboya – Nihiwatu Sunset

Can You See the Nihi Coastline Without Staying at Nihi?
Yes. The resort’s sand is private, but the coastline it sits on is not. Public roads through Wanokaka and Lamboya reach beaches and clifftop viewpoints that share the same ocean, the same left-breaking swell and the same sunset. Three bases cover almost every trip. Tambolaka town suits arrival and departure nights — closest to the airport, with the region’s most reliable services. Waikabubak sits at the centre of the village belt, trimming morning drives to Praijing, Wanokaka and Lapopu. The Wanokaka–Lamboya coast holds the character stays, from surf guesthouses to boutique lodges up to Nihi itself, and puts you beside the sunset instead of an hour from it. On two-night itineraries we usually split the difference: one night inland, one on the coast.
How to Ask Permission in Sumba Villages
The question matters more here than almost anywhere in Indonesia, because West Sumba’s villages are living ritual spaces of the Marapu faith, not open-air museums. The custom is simple: arrive with a guide who is known, greet the family that receives visitors, and accept a few minutes of conversation before anything else happens. Your guide carries betel nut — sirih pinang, the traditional token of respect — and will show you when and how it is offered.
